Mark McLoughlin: A Passionate Explorer of Algarve’s Rich Heritage
For over 20 years, I’ve called the Algarve my home, immersing myself in its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and deep-rooted history. My passion lies in sharing this remarkable region’s unique beauty and stories through writing, photography, and helpful guides for those who live here or dream of making the Algarve their home.
As a Level 10 Google Local Guide, I’ve contributed extensively to showcasing the Algarve’s gems, from hidden beaches to historical landmarks, helping locals and travellers alike discover the best of what this southern paradise offers.
Educational Background
My academic journey began at Winstanley College, where I earned my O Levels. I later pursued higher education at Wigan & Leigh University, achieving a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computer Science, Computer Software and Internet Technology. This foundation instilled in me a lifelong commitment to learning and exploring new ideas, which continues to guide my work today.
Contributor to Algarve’s History
My love for history has led me to actively contribute to Wikipedia, where I’ve added and edited pages on the Algarve’s fascinating past. I’ve explored and documented ancient sites like the Menhirs of Lavajo in Alcoutim and the Menhirs do Padrão & Milrei, offering a glimpse into the region’s prehistoric roots. My work also extends to iconic landmarks such as Loulé Castle and Silves Castle, which reflect the rich legacies of the Romans and Moors.
Unraveling the Mystery of Atlantis
One of my greatest passions is the intriguing theory connecting Silves to Plato’s legendary Lost City of Atlantis. Building on the groundbreaking research presented in Peter Daughtrey’s book Atlantis and the Silver City, I’ve published an article titled “Is The Lost City of Atlantis in The Algarve?” My ongoing research delves deeper into the ancient civilization of Tartessos, believed to be the first settlers of the Algarve and possibly the inspiration or descendants of Atlantis. This enigmatic civilization, renowned for its wealth and influence, mysteriously disappeared in the first millennium BC, leaving behind a trail of myths and mysteries.
Sharing the Algarve Experience
Beyond history, I’m passionate about capturing the essence of the Algarve through my YouTube channel, Algarve Elevated, where I share stunning aerial views of the region. I’ve also published books that explore the Algarve’s charm, offering readers a deeper connection to this incredible place.
Whether you’re seeking a guide to the Algarve’s best-kept secrets, diving into its ancient past, or exploring the theories behind its myths, my mission is to provide insight, inspiration, and stories that bring this beautiful region to life.
