During Easter, the Algarve will be home to a multitude of events. The Easter Dance Camp in Quinta do Lago, the Feira do Folar in Santa Marcos da Serra, and the Festa da Me Soberana in Loulé and the Easter Old Flower Torch Festival in Sao Bras are some of the most well-known.
Weather
The weather in the Algarve at the moment is sunny and mild with daytime temperatures hitting a pleasant 20°C to 25°C. Get your bikini’s out it’s time to hit the beach! However, the evenings can get a little chilly, so it is always a good idea to go out in a lightweight jacket.
Tourism
We recommend you reserve your Algarve hotels and activities well in advance as Easter is a busy time for tourists visiting the Algarve. As hotel rates are likely to be higher at this time of year, it may be worthwhile to shop around or reserve a package vacation.
Local festivities
A variety of religious and cultural traditions are used by Portuguese residents to celebrate Easter. The procession of the Holy Sepulchre, the blessing of the Easter eggs, and the consumption of customary Easter fare like folar (a type of sweet bread) and cabrito assado are a few of the most well-liked (roast kid).
Always Check for Flight Delays Before you Leave
At the time of writing, there are no planned strikes at the airports serving Faro. Checking the most recent information, though, is usually a smart idea before a trip.
There are reports of 2-hour delays at the channel crossings to France, due to Brexit of course and passport checks, if you are thinking of driving down so please be aware of this.
Local cuisine
For the local Algarvians, traditional dishes are prepared to receive the priest such as bolas recheadas (a salty pastry filled with meat and Portuguese sausages), roasted lamb, normally a kid goat, and the traditional folar or pão-doce (a sweet yellow bread).
For Easter Friday the main dish on the menu is Bacalhau, the dried version of cod from Norway. Strangely enough, this is also served for Xmas dinner. So if you are a fish lover you are in for a treat!
However, the Algarve offers a wide variety of tasty native cuisine to suit all tastes. A few of the most well-liked foods are grilled fish (normally sardines), hog dishes, and the seafood stew cataplana. Enjoy a glass of the local wine they are great and very cheap.
Church services
Easter in the Algarve offers a variety of opportunities to attend church services. The Easter Vigil, Easter Sunday Mass, and Easter Monday Mass are a few of the most common celebrations. You may attend any of the religious events at some of the most scenic churches around. However, being a religious country the churches do get full before the service even starts, especially over the Easter period
