Luz is a fishing village, and its name originates from the Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Luz (Church of Our Lady of Light), which was severely affected by the 1755 earthquake and rebuilt by the inhabitants. The beach with fine and white sand, the calm and transparent sea and the characteristic rock formations such as Black Rock, a volcanic formation that extends in a streak from the Monchique Mountain, provide a relaxing well-being. It is awarded with the Blue Flag of Europe. Luz is situated within a short distance from all amenities, restauants, shops, supermarkets, golf courses, camping park, etc. and a 1-hour drive from Faro Airport.
Praia da Luz is situated in a very cosmopolitan summer holiday resort that used to be a major fishing town, especially from the 13th to the 16th century. To the east, stands the limestone and marl cliff, deeply gouged by running water. This whitish cliff is marked by a very dark rock formation that stands out against the landscape: it is the so-called Black Rock, a volcanic vein that extends from the Monchique Mountains to the sea. Praia da Luz is situated close to Luz center with all amenities and the Faro International Airport is located within a 1h driving distance.
