Thinking of Living in Albufeira? Here are 10 Great Reasons for Doing so
This beautiful part of Portugal’s Algarve combines great beaches with engaging architecture and is popular with our team for a number of reasons, so we thought we’d share some of them that constantly draws us back to this wonderful corner of the sun-baked region.
1. The Attractive Prices
Albufeira has to be the cheapest place to live in the Algarve and is ideal for those living on a monthly budget. Being the most popular holiday location in the region and catering for low-cost holidays means that the residents also benefit.
The prices for eating out are much cheaper than anywhere else in the Algarve and the options are far greater. Drinks are also cheaper with bars competing with each other to draw in the crowds of tourists that flock here all year round.
2. The Fantastic Nightlife
Being the largest city for tourism and budget holidays aimed at the younger crowd means the nightlife is busiest in the Algarve. The famous Albufeira Strip is the central gathering point, a two-kilometre road lined with bars and restaurants.
For families, the old town is the place to and although it can get just a busy is much less frantic and is geared more towards those with children.
3. The Great Selection of Local Golf Courses
With three 18-hole courses, Albufeira has the pick of the bunch for any golf enthusiast coming to visit!
The Salgados course is our favourite for its scenic views (it’s located near the beautiful Praia de Gale beaches), many water obstacles, and prevailing onshore breeze make this more challenging than most – definitely worth visiting if you’re a more technical player.
Another option is the Balaia green benefits from all the usual facilities you’d expect at any golf course, such as a putting green, chipping green, a pro shop, and a well-stocked restaurant and bar to relax in afterwards.
4. The Wonderful Array of Restaurants
Having tackled the golf courses under the Algarve sun, you can enjoy one of the many seafood restaurants in the area. If you’re interested in trying the local speciality of stewed cataplana, we’d recommend the Casa Del Mar Algarve restaurant – a famous seafood restaurant popular with visitors. It offers outdoor seating, gluten-free options, and a range of cuisines.
If you’re after something a little more international, you could try the Jaipur restaurant for the authentic Indian and Asian experience or the Chinese Restaurant Happy House which serves an all-you-can-eat buffet for around 14 euros.
5. Ocean Excursions & Party Boats
We always love getting out on the beautiful turquoise waters of the Algarve and can recommend a relaxing dolphin spotting excursion for appreciating Albufeira’s dramatic coastline.
You can find a number of different providers based out of the Marina de Albufeira in Passeio dos Oceanos, who will be able to offer a custom package tailored to your needs. If you’re after somewhere stunning to show your friends and relatives, be sure to book a tour that includes a stop at the famous Benagil Caves. Just be sure to take a waterproof camera to capture great photos of you swimming in the crystal-clear waters there!
If you are looking for something more lively there are several party boats that ensure a good time for the younger generation.
6. The Historical and Entertaining Old Town
If you’re after a little history and culture in your days, be sure to visit the beautiful, cobbled streets of Albufeira’s old town. With mosaic-decorated streets making a stunning backdrop to an array of alfresco dining experiences, it’s the perfect place to collect souvenirs from your time, visit a wonderful art gallery, or just enjoy a coffee in the old town square.
7. The Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness Centres
Albufeira is acclaimed for its many health and wellness spas across the region, so much so, that we found it hard to pick out a favourite amongst them.
The Bali spa is one of our favourites, for the range of massages and treatments it offers, its on-site car parking, as well as its friendly atmosphere – you won’t be disappointed that you visited!
8. A Visit to the Albufeira Marina
The most colourful Marina in the Algarve where all the buildings are painted in different shades of pastel colours. Unlike other marinas in the region, parking has been made easy via a multi-storey car park on the site.
On the marina itself, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from and always something to keep the kids entertained and with a transit-free walkway surrounding the marina, it’s safe for them to play.
Also boasting an indoor karting track for older ones as well as an outdoor area where the younger kids can drive around in a safer environment.
9. Abundance of Shopping Centres
You will be spoiled for choice if shopping is a priority with several shopping centres in the area. The most popular would be the Algarve Shopping in nearby Guia. Boasting a large food court, cinema and all the popular stores you will need.
Just across the road, there is a huge Leroy Merlin, the best store to shop for household and DIY items, and a Macro store. To the right is another shopping area with furniture stores, pet supplies and an Iceland store for all the English food you may be missing!
In the centre of Albufeira, there is a smaller shopping centre that can be used for everyday needs as well as a Lidl and Aldi near the old town.
10. Great Activities and Days out Nearby
Being pretty central in the Algarve you will have great access to all that the surrounding areas have to offer within easy reach.
With two waterparks within 20 minute drive, Aquashow (the best) and Slide & Splash, both provide free transport from the town centre.
A trip to Zoomarine is always entertaining with dolphin and sea lion shows as well as rides for the kids. With a huge swimming pool surrounded by a man-made beach, it really is a great day out.
Other parks include Krazy World which is half zoo and half park and Sand City an outdoor area displaying huge sand sculptures.
